Dr. Guy Cochrane, PhD, is the Scientific Head of the Global Biodata Coalition (GBC) and a faculty member of the European Molecular Biology Laboratory at the organisation's European Bioinformatics Institute (EMBL-EBI), in Cambridge, England.
He works to bring together life science and biomedical funding organisations to build greater sustainability for the data resources that comprise an essential foundation for the progress of the life sciences. As GBC's founding Executive Director from 2022 to 2025, he has driven such initiatives as a consultative white paper proposing principles and models for greater biodata sustainability, a programme to explore and characterise the global landscape of data resources, and extensive usage and impact work to demonstrate the value of the resources.
Previously, Cochrane also served as the Head of the European Nucleotide Archive at EMBL-EBI. With a background in developing and operating life science data resources, he maintains his involvement with sequence databases as an Executive Committee member of the International Nucleotide Sequence Database
Collaboration. His contributions have included policy work around access and benefit sharing, open data advocacy, data standards and technology development, and leadership of the European COVID-19 Data Platform.
