In March 2025, Jo became the Interim Director of EMBL-EBI. Previously, Jo was appointed Deputy Director of EMBL-EBI in 2024, after being Associate Director of EMBL-EBI Services with responsibility for data resources between 2019 and 2024.
Jo is also the Director of EMBL's Office for Science Information Management (OSIM), which supports open science best practice at EMBL. Between 2009 and 2022, Jo was the Team Leader for Literature Services at EMBL-EBI.
Prior to joining EMBL-EBI, Jo was a staff scientist at the NCBI, National Library of Medicine, NIH, USA, where she worked on various literature-related resources and website usability, and was the Editor at Trends in Biochemical Sciences (TiBS), Elsevier. Jo’s primary focus has been on the integration of the open access literature with life sciences data, to support the development of new ways to access and discover research information. This has led to interests in the areas of text and data mining, curation, and scientific credit and impact systems. She holds a PhD in plant biology from Manchester Metropolitan University.
